Exeter Centre for the Study of the Life Sciences (EGENIS) MPhil / PhD Studentship in Philosophy of Biology.

The College of Social Sciences and International Studies at Exeter is delighted to offer a fully funded studentship for a Home / EU student studying for an MPhil / PhD program in the Centre for Genomics in Society (EGENIS). Egenis has a strongly interdisciplinary culture, encompassing a range of perspectives from social science, biology, and philosophy. The successful applicant will work with Professor John Dupré and will be connected with his ERC project entitled ’A Process Ontology for Contemporary Biology’. Topics of particular relevance include biological ontology and philosophical issues in systems biology, synthetic biology, and microbiology, though a wide range of other topics in the philosophy of biology would be considered.

Study Subjects and Level:

Studentship is provided within the department of Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology. The Studentship is available for studying MPhil / PhD program level at university of Exeter.

Eligibility:

  • The award is for home/EU students only;
  • It is not a requirement of these awards that successful award holders undertake teaching for their department. Teaching may be available and if an award holder is paid for teaching it will be in addition to the maintenance allowance.
  • In line with the Research Councils we do not expect our funding to be used for students who have already completed a substantial proportion of a PhD, for example funds should not be used to support a student entering year 3 of a 3 year programme or year 4 of a 4 year program.
  • The studentship is open to both full-time and part-time students from the UK/EU who are studying for a research program in the department of Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology in 2014/15. For part-time students the payments will be on a pro-rata basis.
  • The award will only be made to an applicant who goes on to enroll within the department of Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology in September 2014. Awards are payable in installments on enrollment and continued payment of the studentship is subject to satisfactory annual progression.

Scholarship Duration:

Awards are payable in installments on enrollment and continued payment of the studentship is subject to satisfactory annual progression.

Scholarship Value:

This prestigious award includes the following financial payments:

  • Direct payment of tuition fees (at the standard UK/EU rate)
  • Maintenance allowance for accommodation and living expenses of around £13,726 per annum.

Notification:

All short listed applicants will be invited for an interview and will be required to give a 10 minute presentation. The interviews will take place on week commencing 24 March 2014 in Exeter.
