The Cardiff University offers PhD scholarship in Computer Science & Informatics for international students. The Cardiff School of Computer Science & Informatics is a research-led School in one of the UK’s premier universities with a leading, international reputation for excellent teaching and research activities. The Scholarship duration us 3 years.
The scholarship includes provision of a laptop or desktop computer, and funds attendance at one national and one international conference during the three years of study. To develop your teaching and research skills, and aid career development (either within or outside academia), a wide range of training courses and workshops are available to our postgraduate students. Students are also able to attend a wide range of Masters modules relevant to their research, across a number of Schools.
Successful candidates will also have the opportunity to supplement their stipend by undertaking teaching assistance within the School. Students may take up to six hours per week, equivalent to between £60 and £120 (at 2013/14 rates) depending on the type of session. Such activities may include supervising tutorial and practical computing classes, and course admin duties.
Scholarship Description:
The successful candidate will be registered for a full-time 3 year PhD studying one of the following projects:
- Intelligent Sentiment Analysis for Dynamic and Emerging Topics (supervisor: Dr P Burnap)
- Privacy preservation in Big Data mining and analytics (supervisor: Dr G Loukides)
- Topological Reasoning for Computational Geometry and Robotics (supervisor: Dr K Sidorov)
- Automating ontology building with text mining (supervisor: Dr I Spasic)
- Characterizing biodiversity using Flickr (supervisor: Dr S Schockaert)
- Location Privacy (supervisor: Dr G Theodorakopoulos)

Scholarship Amount:
The award will cover fees at the Home/EU fee rate and will provide an annual stipend (£13,726 in 2013/14). If successful, an International candidate (non-EU) would need to self-fund the remainder of the overseas tuition fee.
Eligibility
Academic Criteria: Candidates should:
- either have a good honours degree in a relevant discipline (minimum 2:1);
- or have (or expect to have by Autumn 2013) a Masters qualification in a relevant discipline, with distinction in the project;
- or have professional qualifications deemed by Cardiff University to be equivalent to the above;
- or be over 25 and have relevant work experience in a position of responsibility.
Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent)
Residency: The full award is open to all students of any nationality without restrictions.
