The Rio Tinto Iron Ore Scholarship has been developed by Rio Tinto Iron Ore in conjunction with Curtin University to encourage and support students who have chosen to study Mining or Metallurgical Engineering at Curtin University. Rio Tinto is Australia’s largest iron ore supplier, operating 14 mines, three ports and more than 1400 kilometres of rail in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Their annual production capacity is 230 million tonnes and they are on a pathway to produce 353 million tonnes per annum by 2015. With over 45 years mining experience in WA, they lead the way in technology and innovation which allows them to develop more efficient, sustainable and safer mining operations.

Study Subjects and Level:

Scholarships are provided in the field of Mining Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering at Curtin University. The Scholarships are obtainable for studying undergraduate degree at Curtin University.

Eligibility:

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be considered for a Rio Tinto Iron Ore Scholarship:

  • Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, the holder of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa.
  • Enrolled full time (100 credits) in either the Bachelor of Engineering (Mining Engineering) or the Bachelor of Engineering (Metallurgical Engineering) at Curtin University.
  • Enrolled in the 2nd year of study in 2014.
  • Enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place at Curtin University and reside within Australia.
  • Minimum course weighted average (CWA) of 65.
  • Not currently hold an industry sponsored scholarship.

Scholarship Open for:

Students of Australia can apply for these merit based scholarships.

Scholarship Duration:

These merit based scholarships are awarded for up to a maximum period of 3 years.

Scholarship Value:

  • A total value of up to $24,000 paid as a cash stipend of $4,000 per semester. The amount can be used at the recipient’s discretion to contribute towards educational related expenses
  • Possible opportunity for vacation work with Rio Tinto
  • Payments occur post census date each semester. Payments will be made approximately mid-end April and September, depending on receipt of payment from Rio Tinto Iron Ore.

Selection Criteria:

Applications will be assessed by a selection panel using the following criteria:

  • Responses to questions in application
  • Academic merit
  • Shortlisted candidates may be required to attend an interview
  • The scholarship(s) will be awarded if there are candidates of sufficient merit.

Notification:

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application via their Official Communications Channel within student OASIS in 6 – 8 weeks of the scholarship closing date.

How to apply?

An applicant must submit a completed application form with supporting certified documents attached by 4:00pm on the scholarship closing date, to the Scholarships Office at the Bentley campus.

Incomplete applications or applications missing documentation will not be assessed.
