"University_of_Oslo_logo"The University of Oslo, formerly The Royal Frederick University, is the oldest and largest university in Norway, located in the Norwegian capital of Oslo. The university is recognized as one of Northern Europe’s most prestigious universities.

A position as PhD Research Fellow (PhD-stipendiat, SKO 1017) in geomechanics related to CO2 storage is available at the Department of Geosciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The position is linked to the SUCCESS research center on CO2 storage. The Department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo comprises sections for Geology and Geophysics; Geography and Hydrology, Meteorology and Oceanography, the Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics (Centre of Excellence) and PGP (Center for Physics of Geological Processes). The academic staff consists of 40 professors and approximately 80 research fellows. Applications are invited for a research fellowship (PhD) position in geomechanics related to CO2 storage at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo, Norway. Capture and storage of carbon dioxide (CCS) in geological reservoirs is required to satisfy global energy needs while limiting the rise in atmospheric CO2 and mitigating potential climate instabilities. Stable geological storage in saline aquifers and depleted oil and gas reservoirs depends on flow of the CO2 phase and subsequent interactions with reservoir and cap rocks.

Study Subjects and Level:

Fellowship is provided in the area of geomechanics related to CO2 storage at University of Oslo, Norway. This fellowship is obtainable for undertaking PhD research at University of Oslo in Norway.

Eligibility to apply:

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. The successful candidate for this fellowship will be selected in accordance with this and is expected to be in the upper segment of his/her class with respect to academic credentials. The candidate should have:

  • Fundamental understanding of rock physics, petrophysics and geophysics
  • Applied knowledge of special core analysis data in petrophysics, rock physics and seismic.
  • Experience with experimental geomechanical and/or rock physics studies
  • Knowledge of stress/strain properties of rocks related to seal integrity, reservoir quality and formation evaluation
  • Research fellowship applicants must hold a Master degree (or an equivalent level of education) relevant for a PhD-study in the above mentioned specialty. Candidates without a Master degree have until 30 June 2014 to complete their final exam.
  • The purpose of the research fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral (PhD) degree. The position requires admission to the research training program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An application to this program must be submitted within one month and be accepted within three months.
