These fellowships are offered by institutions and “laboratories of excellence” (Labex), partners of the program. Candidates apply to the FMSH and specify the host laboratory they wish to join in, amongst our partners for this call. In order to apply, they must obtain a letter from the director of the chosen laboratory demonstrating they will be received there during their stay in France. Candidates can apply to up to two fellowships at the same time.

Study Subjects and level:

Applicant’s projects should match the areas of research of these institutions. All social and human sciences are eligible. An interdisciplinary approach to research topics is encouraged. The Fellowships are obtainable for postdoctoral research stays to carry out a research project in a host laboratory, integrate scientific networks in France and other European countries and build lasting partnerships between their home institution and the host institution.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must reside outside France and belong to a non-French research institution (university, academy of sciences, or other research organism).
  • Applicants can be of any nationality, but at the time of application, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in France for more than twelve months in the three years immediately prior to the call deadline.
  • Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) as at the date of application (i.e. dissertation successfully defended).
  • Applicants must apply within six years of receipt of PhD. Exceptions may be granted in the case of a career break (e.g. interruptions due to maternity leave, illness, etc.).
  • Applicants must be fluent in one of the working languages of the host laboratory; fluency in French or English is preferable.
  • Applicants may not apply to any laboratory in which the applicant has already worked at any time during their scientific experience (including during doctoral studies).

This program is open to applicants from all countries.

Number of Scholarships:

For this call, 33 fellowships in the social and human sciences are offered on a competitive basis.

Scholarship Duration:

The duration of the fellowship is 9 months (however, the length of the research stay can be adjusted if warranted for scientific reasons). Fellowship holders must start their research stay maximum 6 months after obtaining the grant.

Scholarship Value:

The amount of the monthly stipend for room & board and living expenses is €2,000 (euros) net. The cost of medical insurance is covered for the researchers hosted in France. Travel expenses (return travel fare) between the researcher’s country of residence and France are covered, subject to prior approval.

Selection Criteria:

The fellowships will be awarded on competitive basis. Members of the selection committee choose applicants based on:

  • their scientific skills and their academic background
  • the appeal, quality and feasibility of their research project
  • the complementary fit between their project and research being carried out at the chosen host laboratory.
  • the letters of recommendation.

Notification:

Results will be announced in July for March Call and in January for September Call.

How to Apply?

Applications must be submitted electronically via the online application form.

  • Curriculum vitae.
  • List of publications.
  • Detailed research project proposal (5-8 pages, plus a bibliography of 2 pages maximum).
  • Copy of doctoral diploma.
  • Summary of applicant’s doctoral dissertation (2 pages maximum)
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation from scientific scholars. The applicant must tick the appropriate box on the online form indicating that the letters will arrive separately. Please ensure that letters are received before the close of the call for applications.
  • Letter of invitation from the director of the institution or research laboratory, agreeing to host the applicant for the duration of the fellowship.
